Sampdoria coach Vincenzo Montella was apologetic after his team were defeated 3-0 by Genoa in the Derby della Lanterna on Sunday.
The Blucerchiati tactician accepted the blame for the loss and acknowledged that the Rossoblu were superior on the day but he was also relieved that his team survived the Serie A relegation battle this season.
“I saw a superior Genoa in terms of temperament so compliments to them,” Montella told Mediaset Premium Sport. “I apologise to the fans.
“We gave our best but Genoa were better, I pass on my congratulations. They were good in taking their opportunities and it is all my fault.
“I believe that this squad saving itself from relegation is only a small consolation.”
