John Akinde

John Akinde’s injury-time penalty saw Barnet beat Luton and almost end the Hatters’ League Two play-off hopes.

After a goalless first half Barnet broke the deadlock as Luke Gambin curled a superb shot in from 20 yards.

Cameron McGeehan appeared to have earned a point for the Hatters, smashing Scott Cuthbert’s rebounded effort high into the goal.

But Akinde grabbed a winner in the sixth minute of added time after Cuthbert handled the ball in the box.

Luton are now eight points behind seventh-placed Wycombe with eight games remaining, while Barnet sit two points behind the Hatters in 15th.

“We knew it would be a bombardment early on from everywhere, we knew to stay strong and then the game would open up.

“Sadly three bad decisions have cost us really in terms of the decision for the first goal and to try and play when there wasn’t any space for the second goal.

“He (Cuthbert) probably won’t do that for a long, long time, he knew it straight away and he’s frustrated. But he’s been a fantastic captain for me.”
